Brother McGrail returns to visit his ‘Mother Lodge’

Bro. McGrail comes back to visit Pilgrim Lodge (the Lodge he was Initiated into) after his relocation to London.

Returning to my Mother Lodge, Pilgrim.

On Monday the 25th of November 2024, I returned North from my home in London, where I had been completing the final stages of my Master’s. This trip was particularly special, as it marked my return to Pilgrim Lodge No. 7728 in North Leeds, where my Freemasonry journey began. Having anticipated this night for months, I was eager to reconnect with the brothers who had become dear friends during my early Masonic years.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, I joined Pilgrim Lodge, and it felt like a piece of the jigsaw of life had been found. The bonds I formed extended far beyond the lodge, manifesting in regular jokes shared over messages and unwavering support through life’s highs and lows. This spirit of brotherhood was evident yet again when a fellow Mason offered me a place to stay, ensuring we could attend the Installation ceremony together. Such gestures are rare and invaluable in today’s world, reflecting the deep respect and care shared among Masons.

Preparation and Anticipation

The day of the Installation was filled with collective effort and meticulous preparation. Brethren volunteered to pick up others, rehearsed their parts in the ceremony, and ensured that every detail was in place. The lodge itself had transformed in recent months, with its walls repainted and cherished items carefully polished. These enhancements highlighted the dedication to preserving the lodge’s history and creating an inspiring setting for future generations.

Upon entering the lodge, I was struck by its renewed grandeur. The brethren’s aprons and regalia shimmered in the candlelight, symbolising their ranks and responsibilities. The vast numbers of members from various lodges and levels of Freemasonry underscored the respect and admiration for the incoming Master, W Bro. Wharton, whose dedication to visiting lodges throughout the province had earned him widespread esteem.

The Installation Ceremony

The Installation ceremony was a masterful blend of dignity and celebration. The outgoing Master, W Bro. Hooks, delivered a heartfelt address reflecting on his term, emphasising the lodge’s charitable contributions, strengthened camaraderie, and personal growth during his tenure. He expressed pride in leaving the lodge in a stronger position for his successor.

The ritual itself was a testament to precision and symbolism. Each word and gesture carried profound meaning, connecting us to the ancient roots of Freemasonry. As I observed the 80-plus attending brethren, I felt immense pride in being part of Pilgrim Lodge. The ceremony served as a poignant reminder of my own initiation and the enduring sense of belonging it instilled. Every time I attend such events, I gain new insights, forge new friendships, and deepen my appreciation for the values Freemasonry upholds.

As the ceremony concluded, the room buzzed with applause for the newly installed Master. The energy was palpable, a harmonious blend of tradition, honour, and the promise of progress accompanying a new Master’s tenure.

The festive board

A festive banquet followed. Due to the large attendance, we had travelled a short distance to a local golf course, and the dining hall transformed into a scene of camaraderie and celebration. The tables were set out splendidly, befitting the celebration and the efforts of the incoming Master.

I sat among a mix of brothers from various lodges in Yorkshire, and it was great fun to share in the animated conversations. Stories of past events, charity evenings around Leeds, humorous anecdotes of friendship away from the lodge and reflections on the lodge’s legacy flowed freely. The brethren’s diversity—in age, profession, and background—is a testament to the universal appeal of the Craft.

The highlight of the evening came as several toasts were made, highlighting the qualities of Pilgrim Lodge, the incoming Master and the strength of getting together in such substantial numbers. Glasses were raised high for each toast, alongside strong cheers and clinking of glasses representing the brothers’ friendship around the room.

A Night to Remember

As the evening drew to a close, I stepped out into the cool night air filled with gratitude for having been part of such an extraordinary night. The journey back to Pilgrim Lodge had been more than a physical return; it was a homecoming of the heart. The event reaffirmed my love for Freemasonry and deepened my commitment to its principles.

Although returning to London, I felt a touch of sadness about being based far from Leeds. I was comforted by the enduring friendships and warm welcome that Pilgrim Lodge always offers. Nights like this inspire me to be a better Mason, cherishing the rare qualities found in those who choose this path. I promised several brothers I wouldn’t let so much time pass before my next visit—a promise I intend to keep.
